Employment
ARTIST: What I'm about to say is very dificult, but promotion is the key for success. I'm an artist and I'm looking to expose my work. I have a small place in Brooklyn. I would like to change to a gallery, but i need help, money,...I need to know if there is help for artists.
Add your advice for Billy Fleurima below:
- I am a neighbor of Billy Fleurima's. I just wanted to encourage all of you good people to help him find spaces to show his beautiful art and to consider purchasing it to brighten your home. He also does wonderful fine carpentry work if you need any furniture or home restoration. I am an unemployed grad student myself or I would be Billy's patron for sure! - S.P.
- Do you have a website where people can view your work? You might try the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey in Summit. They have a gallery and have several exhibition series like Contemporary View Series, Emerging Artists Series, Juried Shows, Guest Curator Series and a Summer Show.Their website is www.artcenternj.org 908-273-9121. They may be able to put you in touch with other places to exhibit also. Good Luck!
- You might read "Advice to Young Artists" by William Dunning, Syracuse University Press. The study quoted towards the end at the Institute of Fine Art, Chicago is the most interesting and revealing. This is a very common problem even before the financial collapse. After 30+ years I have found that there is no logic to who succeeds and who fails.
- UPDATE: Billy is having an opening to show his work on March 28, 6-9 p.m. 189 St. Marks Avenue in Brooklyn (11238)

Great Deals
- Catskill rentals: Red Cottage or Catskill Ski House
- Cheap Met Opera Tickets! Here's the deal, you go to the Met around 4pm, or earlier ask the guard where "rush ticket" line is, wait in line for about 1.5 to 2 hours and you get $200+ seats for $25 (weekend), $20 (weekday). (We sat in row N last night.)
- Reduced-Fee Psychotherapy for Uninsured New Yorkers: TherapySafetyNet.org Many New Yorkers do not have employer-sponsored health insurance yet do not qualify for public programs such as Medicaid. Out-of-pocket fees for psychotherapy are typically prohibitively expensive without the help of insurance, and many newly unemployed New Yorkers cannot afford the cost of COBRA. Our free referral service connects uninsured individuals with socially responsible psychotherapists (psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, etc.) who each agree to work with a limited number of clients at a reduced rate.

Legal Managment Services
Eve Birnbaum The beefed up law firm management staffs have been particularly hard-hit in this climate. In May I decided to go out on my own as an "independent contractor" or "high quality outsourcer" of law firm management services - and the law firm is only on the hook for a 1-month commitment at any one time. - Anne-Marie McIntyre wrote this on our wall:My husband & I got our credit card rate reduced from 28% to 13% just by asking! Thank you for all the economic info you present on your show, it's made a real difference to me and my family. And to all other listeners push back on those credit card companies!
- Michael in Brooklyn: My partner and I received about a 25% pay reduction at our respective jobs. This made our rent in Carroll Gardens really difficult to meet since we basically live paycheck to paycheck. We explained our situation to our landlord and she was nice enough to reduce our rent the same amount indefinitely. TALK TO YOUR LANDLORDS, they can be reasonable!
Volunteer
- We are looking for individuals who can help show kitties for adoption in space loaned to us by pet shops on Sunday afternoons. This is a great way to spend quality time with cats and kittens while helping homeless animals get a second chance, at a convenient location on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. We would like you to commit to at least one Sunday a month but more often is welcome as long as you sign up ahead of time. Adult volunteers only; you must be over 18 years of age. NYC Siamese
- A lot of gardening projects will be listed on our website soliciting volunteers and donations when we launch IOBY at the end of the month. Gardening in NYC is booming with the combined push for local foods, food justice and an overall interest in responsible conservation happening nationwide.
Real Estate
I am owner of NY Home Staging Solutions a real estate staging company in NYC. We have seen a slight increase in business as more homeowners are looking to us to ensure that their homes are competitive in the changing real estate market. www.nystaging.com

- People are looking for how to live more realistically, and the "experts" still want to restart the process of making ever bigger and more uncertain promises that just failed. I’m a natural systems scientist.
